Hah voms right back in the early 80s on arcade machines....THEN the famicom in japan...then the fat plumber made his way stateside...Sonic wasn't untill the early 90s and Sega was just trying to outdo nintendo...remember their old saying "Sega does what Nintendon't " lol it's so clever

Actually, Nintendo was around a lot longer than that.
They had a line of love hotels, and also produced hand-painted trading cards.

If the question is company vs. company, well, Sega fell flat and started selling its collective body on the street (&@%&ing Sonic games on ^*&@%^ing cell phones) while Nintendo is still going strong, despite competition from companies with extremely hefty backing (sony makes a loss with ps3s? no problem, sell more TVs. MS makes a loss on the 360? hey, <I'll cut this rant off here>).

So Nintendo wins.

However, the question was which character is better.
Mario is fat. He jumps. His power is to travel through sewer pipes (and jump over barrels as JumpMan). He fights a giant lizard to rescue a distressed lady (yes, this would be his third girlfriend he's had to rescue) in the same tired story you've heard for over 20 years. Eh. He's ok.

Sonic is cool. He's fast, he can curl into a ball and shred things. His battle is that of nature vs. the industrialization brought about by humanity. His foe is a man set on turning all the woodland animals into robots. Sonic has cool friends. Tails can fly! Knuckles is just hardcore.

When it comes to character design and story, Sonic wins hands down.

I agree withyou on the fact that sonic is better. But your forgetting audiences. Mario is directed at children... while sonic, children and us...

I also am a fan of Smash Bros, and judging by the demo videos, Sonic will be quite the thrilling character. His Super Smash is, of course, Super Sonic. He flies all over the screen. One hit, even at 0% damage, knocks anyone right off the screen. It lasts long enough to KO someone twice, regardless of respawn time. Whee.
