So I'm going to build a computer and I have most of the basic parts picked out.

Good choice on the mainboard, ASUS and that one in particular are an excellent choice, i'm planning to build my next one around that board too. How fast you going CPU wise?

Case is, uh, very '1337'

Graphics cards are such a bitch to choose, there are so many of them and even when they have the same chipset prices vary wildley, very confusing. More of an NVid fan myself.

I'm probably looking at around 2000mhz and then overclocking it to ~2400mhz if I can. The AMD's are good for overclocking because of how they are made. The motherboard also comes (I found out from that above site) with overclocking software you can run in windows which is pretty sweeeeet.

As for the GFX card I'm gonna try to get the best for the littlest but I'd prefer ATI (I'm an ATI junkie) although I would still go with an NVidia if the price and specs were right.

I'm gonna say you should go with the AMD FX-55 processor...if you want to pay a few hundred dollars more That's what will be in the box I'm going to build around Christmas.

Yeah OR I could buy a cheaper one and then overclock it to the same speed as the FX-55.

If youre finding the lowest priced on Tiger Direct due to rebates then it might be better to get it somewhere else. Their regular prices are usually pretty good but ive got screwed out of a couple rebates by them.

Also if you can hold off till Longhorn comes out hardware prices will most likely drop. Increased required specs will drive mid range components down as they cant be used with newer machines.

I'm gonna be building it over the next couple months. My next investment will probably be a power supply since they probably won't come down in price over that time. The rest I'm looking for on sale if I can find them.

I always build computers, it's cheaper to build them, and it's practically childs-play. All you're doing is pluging things in. I'm saving up for a new computer

heh, yeah its certainly got easier, i built my first one in 93, out of bits of various 286's i think. It only had ISA slots... it needed a 'daughter board' (more slots plus IDE interface) and somthing called a 'maths co-proccessor'. I think i even needed a card for the gaddamn mouse!

Was very complicated, jumpers, jumpers, jumpers, everywhere, arrrghhh!

To be honest though still screw up all the crappy little wires from mainboards to the HDD lights and case mounted USB ports and crap like that..

Got my GFX card today. Booted the comp up with an extra hd and some ram lying around...played a bit of Oblivion...it is TEH nice!!! WEW!

Oh, if you're like me and you like trying to get places you aren't supposed to be (up the hill in the first oblivion gate where the rocks are falling down) and you get hopelessly stuck, use TCL. And if you discover a Three Feathered Goblin that got stuck inside a rock while retaining his ability to shoot arrows (yes, the release point of the bow is actually beyond his personal body barrier), sneak up close to force him to put his bow away, and then take advantage of the use of TCL to frag his three feathered hide.

I need to build a system for my sister for $500 this weekend... any recomendations? I was hoping to get an Asus Barbones system and build up from that, but i cant find any AMD ones in stock, so its looks like i have to build it form scratch.
