Well, how about a dark humour joke?

Exaggerate a few things, but stick to the main story for the most part.
The idea here is to put all of the care on the quarter and for a moment pretend the human child is a justifiable loss.

"So my brother ate a quarter, and he went in for surgery. We saved the quarter, but my brother will have to go for the rest of his life eating through a tube."

Hm...

"So my brother ate a quarter, and now he's having surgery. I hope I get that quarter back!"

Hmm again.
