Then why are people still using photoshop? :P

Because I prefer it, and have seen far more capability to those with more skill than I.

Put frankly, I have never seen things from the gimp that were comparable to many things I've seen from photoshop.

I'm sorry Casey, but the Gimp will never live up to PS.

Dude, Thank you.
As much as I like Gimp for being free, I miss my 'Ctrl-Shift-N' for new layers. And Moving selections. And those damn confusing floating selections that don't stick to layers...

Look. I'm sorry, but as far as usability goes... hm. You can set your own hotkeys? You want ctrlN to create a new layer? Shazam, it's done. You want F4 to invert an image on Tuesdays but scale it down on holidays? There's no problem.
Hate to sound harsh here, but this is a user problem.
The Gimp is hammered by an ever growing group of people (i.e. the community i.e. the world), all with usability issues, all with the ability, nay, the responsibility, to refine the program.
"Free" doesn't just mean "free beer". It means open source. People have had your problems and adapted the program.
Or given up, like you have. See above link.

I figured there would be some way to shift things around to the user's liking, and yeah, I have a long way to go, but I like being a lazy, mindless user. :P

And I'll duely note the HotKeys, thank you.

You artistics types should look into PSE (Photo shop eliments.) its cool because its quick and easy to use, PLUS it has the nice benifit of being able to maintain all its layers and be transfered into adobie. PLUS it has the benifit of understanding many of the qualities of the Gimp. PSE is a excellent transcribing program, and quite powerful in itsself... though not as good as PS4+, but still a nice easy to use program. :P

If anyones wondering, you can download a full 30 day demo all over the place. I highly reccomended it if you want to transfer projects from the gimp too the PS. (though you'll need to find the transfer patch.)

PS. I wouldn't reccomend it for full scale digital editing however, it IS mostely orintated around simple photo corrections, but it does have layers and the like still.

Err... Hate to ask this.. but why?
The Gimp does simple photo corrections, plus everything else you could possibly want it to do.
So why settle for something that, as you've said, just has layers and does simple photo restoration?

I dunno about you, and I could be wrong, but I have NEVER seen something even close to this come out of the Gimp.

This guy is great, but not the best. I've seen even better come out of Photoshop, yet have yet to see anything even close to it come out of the Gimp. Prove me wrong, and I'll gladly shut up.

Well duh, PSE is a joke, you just use it for moving files around because its flexible and has 40ish save formats. (Including my all time favorite; layered Tiff/Jpegs. Incredible.)

Naturally. However, I feel quite comfortable with the selection of 18 in CS2, which includes .tiff and even .pdf for layered images.

Just so everyone knows, I'm currently working on a website and I have found Gimp to be an essential tool for design. MaverickStudios.ca
The photo restoration work and the logo isn't mine, but everything else is.

Hey, that's great.
And acrylic paint is a sucky medium because James sucks at that, too.
In fact, unless absolutely everyone in the world is a genius at any one thing,

The <X> just aint that great.

BRILLIANT DEDUCTIONS!

You based your opinions of the Gimp on James' work on his website.

These forums have been making me really angry lately. I don't know why.
